On a plate, mix the demerara
sugar with ½ tsp of ground cinnamon and set aside.
Spread the Nutella on 4 slices of
bread and sandwich together with the remaining bread.
Cut off the crusts and slice each
sandwich into 4 rectangles.
In a bowl, whisk together the
eggs, milk, cream, vanilla extract and remaining cinnamon.
Add some butter to a frying pan to
grease it and heat on a medium to high setting.
Dip each bread stick into the egg
mixture and fry for approx. 3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
Immediately roll the sticks in
the sugar and enjoy warm.
Tips
Your bread should be slightly
stale. If the bread is too fresh, your French toast sticks will end up soggy.
If you don’t have any stale bread
it’s easy to make some. Simply lay out your slices of bread on a baking tray
and pop them in the oven at 180°C/160°C fan for 10 mins, turning
them over halfway through. Allow the bread to cool before using.
